Leadership the Scoil Mhuire Way
Leadership begins with service. It is not about being the loudest voice or holding the most visible title; it is about choosing to make a positive difference.
At Scoil Mhuire, leadership is developed throughout the six-year journey. It begins in everyday choices: showing respect, including others, keeping commitments, taking responsibility, listening carefully and offering encouragement. As students grow in confidence, they are entrusted with increasing opportunities to contribute, serve and lead.
One culture of leadership
Student leadership and teacher leadership are closely connected. Students learn to lead because they experience leadership around them: adults who know them, support them, expect much of them and help them recognise what they are capable of becoming.
Teachers lead through the quality of the communities they build, the clarity of their expectations, the steadiness of their support and their determination to help every student progress. Students respond by taking greater ownership of their learning, their relationships and their contribution to school life.
High expectations with high support
We do not simply focus on points; we develop the people who can achieve them. Academic success matters, but it is strongest when it grows from character, confidence, purposeful effort, good habits and belief. The person comes first — and achievement follows from helping that person flourish.
The Shared Foundations
Community
Leadership strengthens belonging. Staff and students create a school in which people are known, valued and encouraged to participate. Good leaders notice who is included, who needs support and how their choices affect the wider community.
Support
Leadership is relational. Teachers provide guidance, feedback, challenge and reassurance; students learn to encourage one another, ask for help and offer help responsibly. Support does not remove challenge — it gives people the confidence to meet it.
Drive
Leadership turns intention into action. It means taking initiative, following through, responding constructively when plans change and continuing when progress is difficult. Drive is purposeful and disciplined rather than competitive for its own sake.
High expectations
We communicate belief by expecting students to think deeply, work purposefully, act with integrity and use their abilities well. High expectations apply to achievement and to character: how we learn, how we treat people and what we contribute.
Leadership through the Scoil Mhuire Journey
Leadership develops across the six stages of Belong, Grow, Achieve, Discover, Aspire and Become. At every stage, teachers create age-appropriate opportunities for students to participate, take responsibility and reflect on their impact.
Belong - 1st Year
Leadership begins with joining in, learning the values of the community and recognising that every contribution matters. Students practise kindness, responsibility and respect. Teachers lead by creating safety, consistency and a strong sense of welcome.
Grow - 2nd Year
Students develop greater independence and learn to make constructive choices. Teachers support growth through clear routines, encouragement, feedback and opportunities to contribute.
Achieve - 3rd Year
Students learn that achievement is built through preparation, perseverance and responsible action. Teachers combine academic challenge with perspective and steady support, helping students sustain effort and believe in improvement.
Discover - Transition Year
Leadership moves into action through the Comhar Team, work experience, enterprise, volunteering, Gaisce, projects and school events. Students plan, communicate, collaborate and adapt. Teachers create space for initiative while coaching students to follow through.
Aspire - 5th Year
Students raise their expectations, build independence and begin shaping meaningful goals. Teachers lead by making possibility visible, connecting ambition with purposeful work and maintaining a balance of challenge, support and wellbeing.
Become - 6th Year
Senior students model the values of Scoil Mhuire, welcome younger students and consider the legacy they will leave. Teachers guide them towards examination success and life beyond school while reinforcing that they are more than points: character, kindness and purpose endure.
Teacher Leadership
Creating the conditions in which students can flourish
Teacher leadership at Scoil Mhuire is exercised in classrooms, teams, year groups, subject departments and the everyday life of the school. It is not confined to formal posts. It is the professional choice to strengthen the community, support colleagues and students, sustain high expectations and improve what we do together.
