Teacher Leadership
Teacher Leadership
Creating the conditions in which students can flourish
Teacher leadership at Scoil Mhuire is exercised in classrooms, teams, year groups, subject departments and the everyday life of the school. It is not confined to formal posts. It is the professional choice to strengthen the community, support colleagues and students, sustain high expectations and improve what we do together.
What teacher leadership looks like
Building classrooms where students feel known, safe, respected and ready to participate.
Holding ambitious expectations while providing the structure, feedback and encouragement students need to meet them.
Making learning visible: clarifying the goal, noticing progress and helping students identify the next manageable step.
Using professional judgement, evidence and collaboration to improve teaching and student experience.
Sharing expertise, supporting colleagues and contributing constructively to school-wide priorities.
Creating real opportunities for student voice, choice, responsibility and leadership.
Modelling calm, consistency, integrity, curiosity and the willingness to keep learning.
The relationship between teacher and student leadership
Teacher leadership does not take agency from students; it makes agency possible. Adults establish the purpose, boundaries, standards and support. Students are then trusted to contribute, make decisions, solve problems and accept responsibility. As competence grows, responsibility grows.
This creates a reinforcing culture: teachers model service and purposeful leadership; students experience it, practise it and increasingly lead others. Their questions and perspectives, in turn, help the school learn and improve.
What leadership develops
Confidence to speak, participate and take initiative.
Empathy and the ability to recognise the needs of others.
Responsibility, reliability and sound judgement.
Communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills.
Resilience, purposeful effort and belief in improvement.
A commitment to service, inclusion and the common good.
Leadership is impact
True leadership is measured not by titles, but by the positive difference we make in the lives of others. At Scoil Mhuire, we lead so that people belong, grow, achieve, discover, aspire and become.
