Transition Year is a unique and transformative experience at Scoil Mhuire College. As Volume 4 – Discover of The Scoil Mhuire Journey, this year encourages students to step beyond the traditional classroom, embrace new opportunities, develop leadership, and discover their strengths, interests and aspirations.

Rooted in our ethos of Nurturing for Life, our Transition Year programme provides students with the confidence, skills and experiences that prepare them not only for Senior Cycle, but for life beyond school.

A Year to Discover

Transition Year offers every student the opportunity to:

●      Explore future careers and pathways

●      Experience learning in new and exciting ways

●      Become active contributors to their school and wider community

Throughout the year, students are encouraged to challenge themselves, reflect on their experiences and embrace opportunities that help shape the person they are becoming.

A Broad and Balanced Curriculum

Our TY curriculum combines academic preparation with creativity, innovation, enterprise and personal development.

  • Students continue to develop strong foundations in:

    • English

    • Irish

    • Mathematics

  • Students continue with one of the following:

    • French

    • German

    • Italian

  • Students experience a broad range of Leaving Certificate subjects, helping them make informed decisions for Fifth Year.

    These include:

    • Business

    • Accounting

    • Economics

    • Biology

    • Chemistry

    • Physics

    • Geography

    • History

    • Art

    • Music

    • Home Economics

    Where demand exists, students may also have the opportunity to study outside the main curriculum:

  • One of the highlights of Transition Year is the opportunity to experience subjects and modules that encourage creativity, practical learning and personal growth.

    Modules vary from year to year, ensuring the programme remains dynamic, engaging and responsive to students' interests.

  • Transition Year is enriched through a wide range of workshops delivered by industry professionals, organisations and experts.

    Recent workshops have included:

    • Forensics Workshop

    • Barista Skills

    • Bodhrán Making

    • Careers and CV Writing

    Many workshops lead to recognised certificates, providing valuable additions to students' portfolios and future CVs.

  • Students are encouraged to become active participants and leaders within the school community.

    Transition Year students regularly engage in:

    • Cork History Project

    • School leadership opportunities

    • Charity fundraising initiatives

    • Annual Christmas Appeal

    These experiences foster initiative, teamwork, empathy and social responsibility while developing confidence and leadership.

MyTY – Personal Growth and Reflection

A distinctive feature of our programme is MyTY.

Each student meets individually with a member of the TY Team throughout the year to reflect on her experiences, celebrate achievements, identify new goals and plan future development.

These one-to-one mentoring conversations encourage students to become reflective learners, take ownership of their progress and maximise every opportunity Transition Year has to offer.

Preparing for Senior Cycle

Transition Year provides the ideal bridge between Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate.

Students leave TY with:

  • greater confidence

  • stronger organisational skills

  • enhanced communication and leadership abilities

  • informed subject choices

  • increased independence

  • practical life skills

  • a broader understanding of future career pathways

Most importantly, they develop the confidence to embrace challenges and the resilience to succeed in Senior Cycle and beyond.

Transition Year represents the Discover stage of The Scoil Mhuire Journey—a year dedicated to exploring possibilities, uncovering talents, developing leadership and learning beyond the classroom.

It is a time when students are encouraged to be curious, courageous and open to new experiences, laying strong foundations for the future.

At Scoil Mhuire, we believe Transition Year is not simply an extra year of school—it is a year of discovery that empowers students to become confident, capable and compassionate young women, ready to aspire, achieve and thrive.
